At the end of the article, I’ll share a handy kitchen declutter checklist of things you can purge from your kitchen. Be sure to save the pin below so you can come back to this list, whenever you need.
Keep the Counters Clear With This 10 Minute Rule
Let’s face it – we’re all busy. I have a hectic corporate job that some days leaves me too tired to do anything in the evening.
Thing is though, if I ignore the very visible clutter around me, and let it pile up – it keeps piling on to my mental load – something I need to do but never end up doing. Eventually it all just adds to my stress.
So a few months back, my husband and I decided on a simple morning ritual. While we wait for our coffee to brew – let’s just clear away the kitchen island and the counter. Random bottles, paper clutter, cutlery, the works. It all takes less than 10 minutes. And because we get this done in the morning, leaves me with a clear mind to start my day.
Bottom line – find a simple ritual to clear off your kitchen counters. And stick to it.
Let go of Chipped Crockery & Broken Cookware
This one is a no-brainer – but sometimes we get attached to stuff and never end up letting it go.
That pretty porcelain bowl – you’re never going to use it to serve anything because it’s chipped. That pan with the broken handle – if it still isn’t repaired, it probably never will be. Best to let it go.
Check for Duplicates
I didn’t realise this until I organized my kitchen from scratch, but I had so many pans of a similar size that served a similar purpose,
I finally gave the ones I don’t need away. And ended up freeing so much cabinet space.
So take stock of your cookware and crockery – give away the clones.
Group and Store Similar Items
Loose cookie boxes, chips packets, snacks – prime suspects that end up floating in pantry shelves – taking up space and adding to a lot of clutter.
Group such loose items by type and stash them in baskets or bins. This makes things easy to reach and pull out.
Junk Expired Spices
Spices that have gone past their dates have essentially lost their flavour.
Junk them and clear out space.
Give Away Unused Appliances
The pasta roller or waffle press gathering dust and taking up space?
If you haven’t used it in 2 years, you probably never will.
Best to give them away.
Give Away Unloved Snacks
In our home, we have so many snacks people gift us that we never even end up eating.
Or we have snacks that we tried once but never liked enough to finish the packet.
Most of the time we forget about these and they just lie in our pantry.
It’s a good idea to check your pantry for snacks you don’t really like, declutter and organize it completely.
Store Fancy Crockery Separately
Simple but effective.
If you’re running out of space in your kitchen, stash your fancy crockery in boxes and put them away in a store room or even the garage.
Stops it from getting mixed up with your regular dishes and adding to clutter.
Purge the Fridge
Leftovers that have gone past their time, old condiments and sauces – your fridge can be a hiding ground for clutter.
Take a gander and throw what can’t be used.
