Ahh those pesky pan lids! You’ll always see one floating about where it shouldn’t be. And then, when you really need it – it’ll have just disappeared from sight. Fact is, when it comes to storing pots and pan lids – the struggle is very real. So, if you’re still looking for ways to organize your pot lids – ideas that actually work – you’re going to want to read on.
For the longest time, I used to slot all my pots and pan lids together, upright against the cabinet wall – pretending it’s good enough. But pull one out and the rest would fall like domino chips. The knobby-wobbies would always come in the way and I never could get them to stay put.
When I recently reorganized my pots and pans, I finally learnt the hard way, that until I give my lids a functional, practical, dedicated spot – I’m only going to be creating reasons for future mess (and stress).
So I did a bit of research, and picked a storage solution that was tailor made for my needs and space. Your kitchen and your needs will be different from mine. And there’s more than one way to organize your pot lids.
So, In this blog post I’m going to be sharing the best, most practical ways to store your pot lids – that don’t break the bank. I’ll also break down the pros and cons of each so you can pick a method that best suits your lifestyle.
Hook Them Up for Good
This clever little hack from The Kitchn, is a cost-effective way to give your lids a home.
All you need is two command hooks per lid, stick them on the inside of your cabinet door and slot the lid in.
You will need to measure and mark so you know how many lids you can fit into a single cabinet door.
A nifty way to organize your pot lids – once and for all.
Pro: Cheap and effective, don’t take cabinet space
Con: You’ll probably be able to slot 2-3 lids per door so you need to use more cabinet doors
Slot Them in a Lid Organizer
Add a slotted rack or a lid organizer to your existing cabinet. This one is my go-to method. I even organized the lids of my storage boxes this way.
Each lid gets a dedicated slot, everything is visible and is easy to grab. You can add a simple plate rack, or a slot-adjustable & expandable lid organizer (similar to the one I use) that you can keep customizing to the thickness and space you need for each lid.
Pro: No mess or toppling, visible, easy-to-grab
Con: Will take up some cabinet space
Put a Peg On It: Fix Lids on a Pegboard
From dishes to pans, to lids – the pegboard style of display-cum-storage seems to be all the rage these days. And for good reason – it’s customizable to your lids’ and utensils’ size and even makes a cute statement. This one from Amazon is super sturdy and can take the weight of even the heaviest of utensils.
Pros: Saves a lot of cabinet space, great for small kitchens, grab and go
Cons: You may need to add a few pegboard accessories
Pull a Fast One with a Slide-Out Rack
There’s really nothing more convenient than having a dedicated rack for lids built right into your kitchen cabinet.
These pull out lid racks can be installed into any kitchen cabinets, and, voila!
You no longer need to dig into the back of beyond to pull out your lids. A thing of beauty, really.
Pros: Easy access, keeps lids visible and organized
Cons: Needs installation, and a a bit on the pricier side
Snap Metal Lids Onto a Knife Strip
This one is another clever hack.
You can use a magnetic knife strip and snap your lids onto it. Install it on any kitchen wall and you’re good to go.
Pros: Easy to access, saves cabinet space
Cons: Works only for metal lids
Keep Your Lid On!
This one may sound like a no-brainer, but many people discount this option right away. Mainly because you can’t stack pots and pans with lids on.
But, if you have a deep kitchen drawer or even an open shelf where you can display your cookware, this may actually be a good option for you. In most of these cases, stacking won’t be a viable option anyway.
Why fix what ain’t broke.
Pros: No searching for the right lid
Cons: Takes more space, not great if you have limited cabinet space
Show Them the Door with Over-the-door Organizers
Hang them, drill them in or just stick them onto your cabinet door – these wire racks come with pre-made slots for each lid.
Super convenient and takes a fraction of space.
Pros: Great for small kitchens with less cabinet space
Cons: May not accommodate heavy and large lids
Divide & Rule by Adding a Slotted Bin
This one is a great way to store all your storage container and tupperware lids.
Keeps them organized, keeps them separated by kind, keeps them super visible.
Pros: Ease of access, no mixing or toppling
Cons: Works only for smaller lids like plastic or glass storage container lids
Hold Them Tight with Lid Holders
Smart, no-nonsense and super-easy to install, these lid holders will end up saving you precious cabinet space.
Best part? You can stick them on anywhere – cabinet door, kitchen wall, fridge – wherever you fancy.
Pros: Ease of installation, customizability of placement, inexpensive
Cons: Tend to work better for medium or smaller sized lids
