Our lives are ever-expanding. We’re inundated by new trends, shiny new tools and gadgets that are supposed to make our lives better. The fact however is, the room we have in our homes is not ever-expanding. We try to optimize and organize our existing storage, but even that may not be enough. The good news however, is that there are ways to unlock extra storage in your house.

In this article, I’ll share 10 ways you can squeeze out more storage out of your house. Some of these storage spots and ideas may be underutilized spaces in your home, and some may have been missed by you entirely. Some of these may require additional tools and some effort, but these ideas can help you get much more storage from your house, without breaking the bank.

Use Luggage

Use Luggage as Hidden Storage

We all have empty suitcases taking up space.

The simplest hack to free up more storage in your house is to just put your luggage to use.

Use luggage to store seasonal items, special-occasion costumes, memorabilia and sentimental items you aren’t ready to part with yet.

Basically anything that you don’t immediately need.

Use The Space Under Your Bed

These slim storage bags are ideal for stashing out-of-season clothes and linen under your bed.

They have a clear top, so you know what’s stored where and even have a label sleeve so you can segregate by categories.

A simple , affordable way to get more storage from your existing space.

Use the Top of Your Closets

Stack crates on top shelf of closet to increase storage

We all generally have some amount of unused space on the top shelf of the closet, or even above the cupboard.

This is a great spot to add large, clear crates to store shoes, bags or even linen.

You’ll be surprised how much you’ll be able to store up here.

Use Furniture With Built in Storage

Adding furniture with built-in storage is another great hack to get some hidden storage in your home.

Now you don’t need to go around buying a lot extra furniture for this.

The idea is, if you already need an ottoman for living room, just get one with hidden storage.

Need a bench for your bedroom? Opt for a bench with storage.

Thinking of buying a bed for your spare bedroom? Get a bed that also houses storage space.

Use Doors

Use the Space Behind Doors

Kitchen cabinet doors, bedroom doors, closet doors – most doors in your home can double up as hanging storage.

Just add some hanging door organizers and you can store anything from shoes, to cosmetic, to pot lids.

Use Baskets for Hidden Storage

Cute wicker baskets can be placed anywhere in your home and work as added storage.

Place them in corners in your living room to hide extra cushions or toys and style them with a throw blanket on top.

Or you can place wicker boxes on a console table or bookshelf to hide your electronics.

Add a Pegboard

A pegboard is a truly customizable storage solution that can be added pretty much in any room in your house.

The best part is that you can move the pegs around, add little trays and shelves and accessories, as per your storage needs.

Use it in your kitchen to organize easy to grab tools and accessories, use it in the entryway to hang umbrellas, keys and even coats, use it inside of a drawer to arrange boxes and utensils, or use it in your home office to arrange supplies.
